Chapter 16 - Classroom Administration, Professional Practice, and Development

What types of planning and scheduling can be aided with the use of technology?

Planning and scheduling can be done in word processing and through using spreadsheets and are much more efficient than using hand written methods. The great part about using the computer is not only the neatness but also the ability to save and organize this information for future use. Technology is also great to use in the classroom when creating calenders, job charts, and other informative posters.  Another effective use would be the use of IEP's with children who have learning difficulties, these charts can be modified as time goes on to fit students current needs.

Chapter 15

What role can rubrics play in lesson assessment?

Rubrics are an essential tool in education because they let students know what is expected of them and allow them to understand how the teacher will be assessing their work. When students are well aware of what they need to be doing they are more likely to successfully complete an assignment and can gain knowledge effectively because they are more informed. Rubrics are also a great tool for teachers because they act as a checklist and make it easier for teachers to grade and specifically see what the students have missed.

Chapter 11 - Mathematical Modeling

What is microworld?

A microworld is a tiny world in which students can test out hypothesis' they have and see how the things they try out might work out in the real world if the same situation were to play out. It is a safe way for students to see what might happen realistically, unlike a simulation it is meant for students to take seriously and act as if it were true.

Chapter 10 - Games and Virtual Environments

How can teachers use games with their students?

Teachers can use games with their students as a tool for broadening the educational experience, their are massive amounts of games available with the click of a mouse. Teachers can use simulations which help their students to experience what they are learning virtually without ever having to leave the classroom. There are also many ways to test skills through different drills and practice games for any of the core subjects.

Chapter 4 - Emerging and Assistive Technology

What will the future student computer look like?

Although we are not one hundred percent sure what a future computer will look like it is obvious from the developments we have had over the years that it will be faster, hold more information and data, be lighter, and smaller. It is also likely that it will be touch screen and likely three dimensional along with having 4g wireless capabilities in which users can use the internet anywhere anytime.  Only time will tell how these computers will advance however it is clear that these advances are already being made and that they will continue for years to come.

Technology Integration in the Content Area

What factors must the teacher consider when planning to integrate technology?

When planning any lesson there are a number of factors a teacher must take into consideration such as the age of their students, students current knowledge and skills, time constraints, and so on. These same factors must be looked at when creating any lesson that integrates technology. It is also important for the teacher to make sure he/she is fluent enough in the technology they choose to use for the lesson so that they will be able to help students in any way. When integrating technology it may take longer to lesson plan and to execute the plan so this must be acknowledged by the teacher and they must be willing and capable of  this!

Planning and Developing Technology Rich Instruction

What is Data Driven Desicion Making?

Data Driven Decision Making is a technology used by school systems to collect, organize and analyze data presented by teachers based upon their students abilities and test scores. It allows those assessing the data to make informed decisions about lesson planning, focus on a subject, teacher ability and so on. This type of technology is highly effective in measuring not only the success of students but also of teachers by being able to assess how much their classes have improved over time. This technology is not readily available to all schools which is a challenge for educators and school systems because they are unequipped to evaluate data in a productive and speedy manner.

Integrating the World Wide Web

What constitues a quality online educational resource?

First and foremost an educator should make certain that the site they are looking to use is credible and has the proper documentation to support its information. The author/creator of the site should be stated along with contact information and any credentials the person may have. The site should also give credit to any sources they have used and should not require the user to give their name or pay any type of fee. Content of the site is also important to look at thoroughly, whatever the title of the site claims to be about should be present throughout. It should also provide resource links to other sites along with information that is unbiased. It should be suitable for the age that you intend to use it with in both features and text and should be easy for them to navigate. The design and set up of the site should be directed towards children's use and should be presented in an appealing manner.

Chapter 6

Identify supportive research that emasures the effect of technology on science achievement

Technology has effected achievement in science in both positive and negative ways however in my opinion the positives greatly out weigh the negatives. Drill and practice software have a slightly negative effect. However the simulations have an amazingly positive effect on students and their learning in science. It gives students the ability to have a hands on life experience without all the financial expenses and dangerous consequences. For example, the dissection simulations where students can realistically take apart a frog and examine the life like parts they have. These advances have helped students gain a better understanding of sciences along with even greater technology fluency.

Producing and Presenting, Including Podcasting and Digital Storytelling

What role can digital storytelling play in education?

Digital storytelling can lead to the development of all the arts, visual, language, speaking and reading because it requires students to utilize each of these. As students are developing their digital stories they must work together in a cooperative group and come up with ways to incororate each of their different ideas which makes this a great team building experience for students as well. It is also a great form of technology integration because students must learn and master new programs to compete the assignment, it also gives them the opportunity to see how these technologies can be used in daily life.

Chapter 5

How safe are the social networking sites for students?

Social networking sites can lead to sexual assaults, bullying, and invasion of privacy which is why it is so important that parents and teachers inform students of these dangers. When students know what is at risk they can take the precautions to avoid these things from occurring. Since they are not safe it is essential that these sites be monitored for students.

Chapter 12

What factors must teachers consider when planning data analysis activities?

There are many factors to consider when integrating data analysis into lesson plans, first you must take into consideration the grade level and ages that you are working with. You must also know their present ability when it comes to fluency in technology. It is important to  make sure you know their skill level so that you can provide them with the appropriate building blocks in order for them to succeed at whatever they are attempting. You do not want students to become frustrated with technology causing them to withdraw themselves from the experience. You should make sure that the lessons you plan are enjoyable and interesting to students as well so they become more likely to want to use technology in the future.

Chapter 3

What are good practice manners to follow when using email?

Emails should be presented in a professional manner, they should be addressed to the sender with the appropriate title along with appropriate use of language and spelling. It is essential that emails contain information that you would be willing to have others see and do not expose any unsavory details about the sender. Emails are forever and once they are sent they can be used against their sender in a negative way if they contain inappropriate information. Therefore it is so important especially for educators to make sure what they send out is appropriate for both parents and students. Sending emails is also a big component of good communication between teachers and the parents of their students, therefore being professional and timely when emailing is of utmost importance.

Chapter 2

How can spreadsheets and databases be used to address different learning goals?

Spreadsheets can be used in education for presenting numerical and scientific data as well as being used for students to analyze and better understand information in social studies. Statistical information is used prominently in the form of databases so it is important to inform and educate students on not only how to read data in this form but also how to present data this way.

Getting Started With Technology

What impact has technology had on educators and education?

Technology has impacted not only the way we teach but also the classroom dynamic in a monumental way. Educators must now find ways to incorporate the developing technological advances into their lessons and their students daily lives in order to prepare them for the future. They must also use these new technologies in their classrooms by taking advantage of smartboards, computers, etc in a cohesive and comprehensive manner. Education has expanded so rapidly and continues to change and develop day to day which creates new challenges for the education world and even higher expectations.
